Why Siriki Dembele would add some valuable depth for Sheffield United
According to Birmingham Mail, Sheffield United are interested in signing Peterborough United star Siriki Dembele ahead of the new season.
The youngster excelled throughout the 2019/20 campaign alongside Ivan Toney and Mohamed Eisa for the League One side and has attracted a lot of interest. However, the Blades could face competition to secure his services as West Brom are also keen on the winger, as per the report.
Profile
Born in London, Dembele started his journey with Dundee United before joining Ayr United’s U20 side for a year. He then joined the Nike Football Academy before making the jump to Grimsby Town in the summer of 2017. In 39 games for the Mariners, he scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists before Peterborough signed him in the summer of 2018.
Since then, he has established himself as a key figure in the squad and has been one of their best players. After finishing with 7 goals and 7 assists in the 2018/19 campaign, he continued with the fine form into the following season and racked up 6 goals and 9 assists in 30 games across all competitions.
However, he could be on the move with his impressive performances catching the eye of above mentioned two Premier League sides.
Dembele could provide depth in attack for Sheffield United
Though Chris Wilder’s men were brilliant throughout the campaign, they need to improve in the goalscoring aspect. The Blades managed just 39 goals in the 2019/20 campaign, which would not be enough if they have to secure a place in the European competitions.
Lys Mousset and Oliver McBurnie were the top scorers for Sheffield with 6 goals but they need to bolster their and score enough to compete at a higher level. And also, they have just one winger in their ranks in Callum Robinson. Thus, signing a winger in the summer would help them improve their attacking unit for the future.
In that regard, signing Dembele would be a smart move by the club. The Scotsman was in brilliant form since the turn of the New Year and his impressive performances helped the League One side finish the campaign with a strong run. He can be a crucial player for the Blades next season if he is able to continue with the fine form.
Adding Dembele to the squad would benefit them in terms of depth and quality on the flanks. He is capable of playing on either wing and is also equally good while deployed through the middle and his versatility can be a massive boost for the squad.

Verdict
With limited options in the wide areas, it is clear that the Blades are in dire need of wingers to the squad. And Dembele can provide them with some much-needed extra goals. He is just 23 and has a lot of room for development, and can go on to represent them in the long run. Thus, Sheffield United should attempt to lure the former Grimsby Town man to Bramall Lane at the earliest.
