Why a move for Ever Banega makes sense for Unai Emery’s Arsenal

The emotional egress of iconic Arsene Wenger has left a massive void at Arsenal, yet the supporters are dreaming of a new dawn under Unai Emery, his successor, who is already active in the summer transfer window.

Arsenal, despite missing out on Champions League football for the second successive season, have concluded a number of shrewd signings so far and are closing in on a few more sensational deals which signify their drive and desire to succeed next season.

The Gunners have already announced the inclusion of veteran right-back Stephen Lichtsteiner along with German custodian Bernd Leno, whereas the announcement regarding defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos will be made within the next few days.

Arsenal, meanwhile, failed to retain the midfield duo of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere. Cazorla was out injured for more than a year and opted to return to his former club Villareal this summer.

On the other hand, Wilshere rejected a contract renewal, following a discussion with the new manager and the Englishman will leave the Emirates Stadium when his present contract expires at the end of this month.

But the Gunners have already lined up alternatives in the middle of the park and have struck a deal for Uruguayan Lucas Torreira, whose announcement is getting delayed due to his involvement in the ongoing World Cup. Arsenal, however, are not done yet and are reportedly keen on Argentine veteran Ever Banega, whose agent recently travelled to London for initial talks.

The 29-year-old playmaker is currently in Russia for the World Cup and his profound experience for both club and country makes him a prized asset for any outfit. He had successful years in Valencia before joining Sevilla back in 2014.

Although he was sold to Inter Milan a couple of summers ago, Sevilla opted to buy him back just after one season in Italy.

The Gunners already have the likes of Mohamed Elneny, Aaron Ramsey and Granit Xhaka in central midfield, and the arrival of Torreira will only increase the competition. Yet, they must push to sign Banega, who excelled exceptionally under Emery during his managerial spell at Sevilla.

Banega was pivotal in Sevilla’s back-to-back Europa League triumphs and his versatility, as well as his ability to pull the strings from a central role, will make things easier for the likes of Mesut Ozil, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s. Emery and Banega know each other well and their chemistry will definitely help Arsenal to restore their lost pride.
