Why Sheffield United should continue in their pursuit of Rhian Brewster

According to The Sun, Sheffield United are interested in signing Liverpool starlet Rhian Brewster on loan in the summer. The youngster is currently on loan with Swansea City.

Brewster, 20, moved from the academy of Chelsea to Liverpool in the summer of 2015. Since then, he has been on the rise and has excelled for whichever team he has played for. The youngster was instrumental in England’s U17 World Cup win in 2017 as he finished the tournament with 8 goals, making him the highest goalscorer.

Despite impressing, he failed to feature regularly under Jurgen Klopp for the Reds due to the big names present in the squad and was eventually sent on loan to Swansea last January. He has once again proved to make a difference, helping them qualify for the playoffs. He is a highly-talented youngster and thus, Sheffield should make a move for the Brewster this summer.

The Blades, meanwhile, ended up losing on the Europa League spot after their 1-3 loss to Southampton on the final day of the season. But Chris Wilder’s men have been one of the surprise packages of the league this season. They did outperform some of the top teams in the league and finished in a decent 9th position.

However, it is the right time for the manager to focus on taking his team a step further into European competitions. And for that to happen, they need to bring in reinforcements and increase the squad depth.

Brewster – A young striker in Sheffield United’s attack

At the moment, the Blades have a plethora of attacking talents in their ranks. Lys Mousset, Oliver McBurnie, Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick are the main strikers available at the manager’s disposal, while on-loan forward Richario Zivkovic could return to Changchun Yatai once his loan spell expires at the end of this month.

Mousset and McBurnie finished as the club’s top scorer with 6 goals but Sharp and McGoldrick didn’t make much of an impact on the team. As a result, the Blades managed to score just 39 goals, which is not enough for a team trying to finish in the European spot. Thus, to improve their goal count next season, a centre-forward is a must.

In that regard, Brewster would be a viable option for the club. The English youth international has been in sensational form since the restart, scoring 6 goals and taking his tally to 10 goals in 20 league games for the Swans. He is one of the best strikers of his age group and has got better each day.

His inclusion to Wilder’s squad would be a boost as Sharp and McGoldrick are already beyond 30 and cannot be depended upon to lead the line week in and week out. At the same time, he would definitely bring healthy competition for McBurnie and Mousset upfront. And if he is able to continue with the form, he would be a crucial player for the Blades next season.

Verdict

Though Sheffield have done well in the league, they need to be clinical up front. And given a couple of their strikers not at their best, they need to inject the squad with young blood. And Brewster could certainly make a difference to their attacking unit. Thus, they should manage to lure him on loan to Bramall Lane this summer.
