Why Sergio Romero would be a fantastic fir at Leeds United

According to TyC Sports (h/t The Mirror), Leeds United are keen on signing Manchester United star Sergio Romero in the summer.

Romero, 33, came through the ranks of Racing Club’s youth system in his homeland and moved to AZ Alkmaar in 2007. After making 112 appearances for the Dutch outfit, the goalkeeper was signed by Sampdoria and kept 25 clean sheets in 74 appearances for the Italian side. His impressive performances earned him a move to Manchester United in the summer of 2015.

However, since his move to Old Trafford, he has been an understudy to David de Gea and has not made a single league appearance in the last two seasons. But he is Argentina’s first-choice shot-stopper and has already made 96 appearances at the international level.

Despite not being used regularly in the league, he has been brilliant for the Red Devils in the other cup competitions. The report suggests that Romero could be demoted to the third-choice goalkeeper if Dean Henderson returns after his loan spell. Thus, Leeds should look to secure the services of the Argentine at the earliest.

Romero could strengthen Leeds’ goalkeeping department

Having gained promotion to the top-flight after winning the Championship this season, the Whites’ boss Marcelo Bielsa needs to strengthen his squad. He needs to bring in reinforcements to several key areas if they are to sustain and progress in the Premier League.

One area where the manager should focus on strengthening is the goalkeeping department. Their first-choice in goal is former Real Madrid shot-stopper Kiko Casilla.

Though he did well earlier when he was signed by the Whites, his form towards the end of the last campaign deteriorated and that cost them the promotion last season. This season, he missed a lot of games after being suspended for racially abusing an opponent.

Illan Meslier and Elia Caprile are the other two goalkeepers in their ranks. The former did well in the absence of Casilla but he is just 20 and cannot be depended upon through the whole campaign. He needs experience to perform continuously in the top flight. The same goes for Caprile as well. Thus, they need an experienced shot-stopper in their ranks, who could provide competition for Casilla.

In that regard, Romero would be a suitable option for the club. The Argentine, who has just one year left on his contract at Old Trafford, has done well whenever called upon. In 59 games for United, he has kept a staggering 38 clean sheets while conceding just 26 goals. He has immense experience at the highest level and has also been brilliant for his national team.

Romero’ inclusion would definitely strengthen Leeds’ goalkeeping department. In addition, his experience would come in handy for the club. He has immense qualities and with regular game time, he can make a difference for the Whites.

Verdict

At 32, Romero doesn’t seem to be slowing down. He can be a crucial player for Leeds next season, especially in the Premier League. And with limited options in their ranks, the Whites are also in dire need of goalkeepers. Thus, they should take advantage of his situation at Manchester United and lure him to Elland Road this summer.
