Why Sergio Romero to Aston Villa would be ideal for all parties
Sergio Romero could finally be on his way out of Manchester United after five years, where he has mostly played as the understudy to David de Gea. He has mostly featured in cup competitions, while making just 7 appearances in the league.
Aston Villa are among the interested parties, with the club looking to replace Pepe Reina, as per The Athletic. Manchester United however will ask for Villa’s prized asset Jack Grealish and Romero could be used to lower the transfer fee by a bit.
Profile
The 33-year-old started his senior career at Racing Club in his native Argentina back in 2006. A year later, he moved to Europe with AZ. He won the league in 2009 under Louis van Gaal.
He then moved to Italy and joined Sampdoria, helping the club gain promotion in 2012. A loan move to Monaco followed in 2013 but Romero failed to get games there.
Manchester United signed him on a free transfer in 2015 to provide cover for De Gea. He has since won the Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup, and he had a major part to play in them too.
Do Aston Villa need him?
Villa managed to secure another Premier League campaign by the skin of their teeth after finishing 17th. The club have signed Ollie Watkins, Matty Cash and Ben Chrisene this summer so far.
Aston Villa should look to bring in Sergio Romero next as he comes with bags of experience and winning mentality. He may not have played much in the league but he does have the familiarity of playing in England. His stats for the Argentina national team aren’t too shabby either.
The goalkeeping department is crucial for any team and having a reliable goalkeeper like Sergio Romero would be quite useful for Aston Villa. The £70k-a-week Manchester United star is clearly a talented player and would boost Villa’s quality in goal.

Verdict
Sergio Romero’s move to Aston Villa looks like a good deal for all parties. Villa would get a solid goalkeeper who has proven himself in the limited chances he has been afforded. Manchester United get the cash and it reduces the pressure on the wage bill. As for Romero, he finally gets to be the first-choice keeper. It remains to be seen how this deal works out.
