9 goals, 8 assists – Chelsea signing this £27m defensive star would ease their woes at the back

Why Robin Gosens would be a fantastic fit at Chelsea

According to Kicker (h/t The Metro), Chelsea have made Atalanta star Robin Gosens their top transfer target ahead of the summer.

Gosens, 26, spent time at the academies of FC Bocholt, VFL Rhede and Vitesse Arnheim before making the jump to Heracles Almelo in the summer of 2015. In his two seasons with the Dutch outfit, he made 70 appearances, bagging 5 goals and 7 assists, and was signed by Atalanta in the summer of 2017.

He immediately established himself as a key member of the squad and has grown into one of the most exciting full-backs in Europe. The report also suggests that several clubs including Juventus, Hertha Berlina and Inter Milan are considering a move for the German, who is priced at £27m by his club. Thus, Chelsea should make a swift move for the left-back.

Gosens could be a reliable left-back for Chelsea

Chelsea’s defence this season hasn’t been up to the mark as they have already conceded 49 goals so far, which is the highest tally in the top half of the Premier League table. And it is clear that the manager needs to bring in defensive reinforcements.

One key area Lampard should focus on strengthening is the left-back position. Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri are the only two left-backs available at the manager’s disposal. Emerson has been frozen under Lampard and Alonso, who has been decent in the last few months, has not been at his best due to inconsistency.

To that end, signing Gosens would be a fantastic move for the Blues. The German has been in sensational form this term, scoring 9 goals and providing 8 assists in 30 league games. He is a key member of Atalanta, who have scored 94 goals in Serie A. And his numbers prove that he is capable of providing the goods in the attack apart from doing his defensive duties.

The 26-year-old has been consistent in the last two seasons and his inclusion could be a boost for Lampard’s squad. Given his recent form, he could walk straight into the Chelsea starting XI and make a difference.

 Verdict

With Alonso and Emerson heavily linked with a move this summer, it is clear that Chelsea need to strengthen their left-back position. Gosens is a quality player and could also provide them with some much-needed goals from the back. Thus, they should sign the German and keep the squad strength intact.
