Why Bruno Fernandes would be a great signing for Real Madrid

According to The SunReal Madrid are keeping an eye on Bruno Fernandes’ situation at Manchester United. It was reported that the £100,000-a-week star was unhappy on being subbed off at half-time versus Spurs and there was a dressing room altercation between him and Solskjaer. Barcelona is the other club that is interested.

The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder started his youth career at FC Infesta in 2002 and moved to Boavista after two seasons. He spent most of his youth career there until 2012 when he signed his first senior contract at Novara.

Spells at Novara, Udinese and Sampdoria followed from 2012 to 2017. While he did not have the best of times in Italy, it all changed with his move to Sporting CP in 2017. In 137 appearances for the Portuguese giants, he scored a scarcely believable 63 goals and 52 assists (source – Transfermarkt).

Manchester United signed him in January last season as he single-handedly pulled the club to a 3rd-place finish in the league, thereby securing Champions League football. While he may have played just 26 games for them, he already has 24 goal contributions.

Fernandes was a regular for the Portugal youth sides before starting for the senior team. He has 23 appearances and 2 goals to his name so far.

Why Real Madrid should sign Fernandes

Real Madrid have a decent squad at this point of time but a lot of their star players are ageing. They do have some fine young players to take over the mantle but it would seem too soon for them to slip into the shoes of these legends in a year’s time.

Real Madrid’s midfield lynchpins Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are 35 and 30 respectively. While Kroos looks like he can pull through for a few more years, Modric needs to be replaced sooner rather than later.

Bruno Fernandes not only solves the ageing problem, but he brings a legitimate goal threat with him. He is one of Europe’s most lethal midfielders with the sheer amount of goal contributions he brings to a team.

At 26, he has a fair few years to offer his services. Real Madrid have lacked a genuine goal threat in recent seasons and could do with some goals from the midfield. Fernandes should be the man for that. He would be quite a good signing for Real Madrid.
