Real Madrid signing this veteran Serie A attacking star would be a smart stop-gap solution to their problems

Why Real Madrid should make a move for Edin Dzeko

According to The Sun, Real Madrid have been tipped as the favourites to sign Edin Dzeko who wants to leave AS Roma. The former Manchester City striker has fallen out with manager Paulo Fonseca over the sacking of Gianluca Gombar.

The striker has been dropped in recent games and that has led to speculation regarding his future. Other clubs like Barcelona, Everton, Man City and West Ham are also among the names to be his next club.

Real Madrid are short-staffed in attack

Real Madrid are in one of their most difficult and transitional periods in recent history. It was only due to the sheer grit and determination of the side that they won the La Liga last season but managed to crash out of the Champions League in the last two seasons.

They didn’t start this season well but have performed better in recent games. However, it is rather apparent that they need a prolific goalscorer to ease some of the burden on Karim Benzema’s ageing legs.

They recently let go of Luka Jovic on loan to Eintracht Frankfurt, which leaves them short-staffed in attack. The fact that Jovic scored 2 goals in his first game on return to Frankfurt might tell you that Real gave up too soon on him. Other than Benzema, Mariano Diaz is the only striker available at Zinedine Zidane’s disposal. So, adding another forward should be on the club’s agenda.

Dzeko can be a good short-term solution

Eden Dzeko is no stranger to scoring and creating goals. The 1.93-metre tall striker has scored 114 times and created 52 goals in his 242 outings for AS Roma. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Such statistics would surely boost Real Madrid’s hopes for this season. With age not on his side and his contract expiring in the summer of 2022, any deal for Dzeko would likely not warrant a huge sum.

The biggest hurdle to the move, however, would be Roma’s shortage of depth up front. Dzeko is AS Roma’s captain and their first-choice centre-forward. Apart from him and his alternative, Borja Mayoral, Roma do not possess an out-and-out striker.

Any deal that sees Dzeko move to Real may hence require a deal elsewhere that ensures Roma can replace their captain.

Edin Dzeko would be a good short-term fix for a side like Real Madrid, who have only one quality striker in their ranks in the form of Karim Benzema. He knows how to find the net on a consistent basis which would serve Real’s immediate requirement.
