Why Rangers were right in handing a new contract to Borna Barisic

According to Sky Sports, Rangers left-back Borna Barisic signed a new contract with the club last month that will keep him at the Ibrox until the summer of 2024.

Barisic, 27, came through the ranks of NK Osijek’s youth system in his hometown. He played for clubs like BSK Bijelo Brdo and Dinamo Zagreb before moving to Scotland with Rangers in the summer of 2018.

In his debut season in Glasgow, injuries to his calf and knee restricted him to just 15 Premiership games and he struggled with fitness issues for some time until the start of this campaign. However, he has now established himself in the left side of Rangers’ defence line and has been impressive so far.

He has been a regular member of the squad under Steven Gerrard and has and has featured in 32 games across all competitions for the club. in the process, he has scored 2 goals and provided a whopping 14 assists, making him the top assist-provider for the club this term.

The Croatian international is a valuable asset to the team and has shown his qualities in both defensive and offensive situations. Hence, Rangers have made the right choice by tying him down to the club for some more years.

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard’s men have faltered as far as closing the gap with rivals Celtic are concerned. The Gers need to be at their best for the remainder of the season if they want to claim the title for the first time since 2011.

Rangers have only one established left-back in their ranks in Barisic and the Croatian has delivered the goods for the club on several occasions. He has played 200 games in total for four different clubs and his experience would be handy for the Gers.
