Why Rangers signing Rayhaan Tulloch would make no sense

According to The Mirror, Scottish side Rangers have been credited with an interest in West Brom’s Rayhaan Tulloch, whose contract is set to expire at the Hawthorns in the summer.

Tulloch, 19, came through West Brom’s youth academy and has featured in 47 games for the club’s U23 side, scoring 14 goals and providing 8 assists. Though he is yet to feature in the Championship, he has made two appearances for the senior side in the FA Cup wins against Charlton Athletic and West Ham this season.

A talented forward, Tulloch’s feature at the Hawthorns is uncertain but the report suggests that he could continue to play for the Baggies if there is a hike in his pay.

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard’s side have not been consistent in the last two months. In the last six league games, they have won, lost and drawn twice each and that has resulted in Celtic extending their lead with 12 points in the Premiership table.

Despite starting the season on a high note, they have fallen behind and the loss to Heart of Midlothian and Kilmarnock has cost them in their race to the title. However, they are still going strong in the Europa League after their 3-2 comeback victory over Braga in the first leg of the intermediate stage.

The Gers have a plethora of forwards in their attacking ranks. Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe have been consistently banging in the goals. Whereas, Ryan Kent, Scott Arfield and Joe Aribo have supported the forwards well. In that case, Rangers should opt-out of making a move for Tulloch.

The 19-year-old has been in brilliant form this season, scoring 9 goals and providing 4 assists in the Premier League 2. But he has no experience with the senior team. Rangers need an experienced player to boost their attacking ranks for next season.

Ianis Hagi, who was signed on loan in January has been influential to the team, especially in the win against Braga. And his move could be made permanent. Jordan Jones and Jack Hastie are other options available on the wings. And Greg Stewart, signed last summer, is another option to lead their attack.

Hence, the West Brom academy product would be surplus to Gerrard’s squad. The teenager should develop himself with West Brom before making a move elsewhere. He needs to gain experience, whereas the Gers, who have struggled a bit, need a player who can help them in a difficult situation. This can only be done by a player with experience.

Verdict

Instead of bringing in a forward, Gerrard must look to strengthen other areas. That could help the improvement of squad depth when the loan signings return to their parent club. Therefore, the Gers must avoid signing Tulloch in the summer.
