Why Rangers should make a move for Ryan Babel

According to The Scotsman, Ryan Babel, who is currently on loan with Ajax, has expressed his desire to play for Rangers under Steven Gerrard.

Babel, 33, has enjoyed an illustrious career, spanning across several clubs including Liverpool and other clubs from La Liga, Bundesliga and the UAE. He has won several trophies, including two Dutch titles with Ajax and was also a part of the Netherlands squad that reached the finals of the 2010 World Cup and the Inaugural UEFA Nations League.

The former Liverpool man is one of the most experienced players and has also earned a recall to the national team in recent times after impressing at the club level. Though he is 33, he still has the energy left to play at a high level. Thus, Rangers should make a move for him this summer.

The Gers have failed in their quest to attain the league title after starting the season on a bright note. They lacked intensity towards the latter stages of the league season and have fallen 13 points behind league leaders Celtic. They had also lost the Bretford Cup final earlier in December to their rivals and are still waiting to get their hands on their first trophy under Steven Gerrard.

However, they have a chance to win the Europa League when the games resume but they would have to make a tremendous comeback in the second leg against Bayer Leverkusen. Though they have played well as a unit, the Gers lost their momentum a few weeks before the suspension of the league.

Thus, Gerrard has to bring in reinforcements in order to do well next season. The manager should make sure that there is adequate depth in every area to play without any limitations throughout the season.

Babel – An experienced player in Rangers’ attack

While Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe have led the line brilliantly, Ryan Kent has also played a key role throughout the campaign. But he has done it without any proper back-up on the left side of the attack.

Jordan Jones, who was signed from Kilmarnock last summer, has featured in just 7 games and Jack Hastie just arrived from a loan spell. Brandon Baker has also not had enough opportunities. All of them are young and inexperienced.

In that regard, signing Babel would be a boost for the club. The Dutchman has made 544 career appearances and his experience would be a massive boost for the Scottish giants. In the first half of the season, he scored 5 goals and provided 1 assist for Galatasaray before moving to Ajax in January.

Babel has already featured for some of the top clubs in Europe. He has also fought his way back into the national team with a rise in his form in recent years. He would definitely bring a wealth of experience to Gerrard’s squad and could be a crucial player for a few years.
