Why Rangers should invest in Lewis Ferguson for the future

According to Daily Record, Rangers are interested in signing their former youth prospect Lewis Ferguson in the summer.

Ferguson, 20, is a product of Rangers and Hamilton Academical’s youth system. After impressing with the latter’s U20 side, he was promoted to the first team in January 2017. A year and a half later, he was signed by Aberdeen and since then, he has become an integral member of the club.

The youngster has displayed notable performances that belie his tender age and has also coped with the pressures of playing at a higher level at just the age of 20. He is also a regular member of the Scottish U21 side and is one of the exciting young talents in the country. And, the report suggests that Championship side Brentford are also tracking his progress.

Rangers, meanwhile, have failed in their challenge for the Premiership title as they once again lost out to rivals Celtic. It has become a hard task for them to stop their rivals’ dominance in the league.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has a lot of work to do ahead of the next season. The manager needs to bring in reinforcements and make sure they are well equipped in every department if they are to lift themselves and do better in further campaigns.

Ferguson – A future leader in midfield for Rangers

Rangers have a plethora of midfielders in their ranks in Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack, Steven Davis and Joe Aribo. And Greg Docherty has also returned from his loan spell with Hibernian after a decent campaign.

However, Arfield is already 31 and reaching the rear end of his career. He has done well so far, racking up 5 goals and 4 assists in 26 league games but has just two years left on his contract with the club. In addition, 35-year-old Davis is entering the final year of his contract with Gers. Therefore, Rangers should look to bring in a youngster to eventually replace the veterans.

In that regard, signing Ferguson from Aberdeen would do them a world of good. The Scotsman has got enough experience in the Premiership. In 28 league games this term, he has racked up 1 goal and 5 assists, helping his side to the fourth place in the standings. And these numbers are more than good enough for someone of the youngster’s age.

Ferguson’s inclusion in Gerrard’s squad would definitely bring in a healthy competition, whilst also adding much-needed depth. He can go onto replace Davis or Arfield, with time. The youngster has all the qualities to succeed and with experience would grow into a valuable member if he is able to keep up with the good form.
