Why Rangers should continue in their pursuit of John Lundstram

According to The Athletic (h/t Daily Record), Rangers are interested in signing Sheffield United star John Lundstram this summer.

The report suggests that the Blades have made Lundstram available for transfer after the Englishman refused to sign a new contract at Bramall Lane. It is also claimed that the Gers boss Steven Gerrard is looking to bring in midfielders and is looking to sign the former Everton youngster.

Born in England, Lundstram came through the ranks of Everton’s youth system but he couldn’t make it into the Toffees’ senior setup. He spent much of his career on loan spells and played for clubs like Yeovil Town, Leyton Orient, and Scunthorpe United before joining Oxford United on a free transfer in August 2015.

After making 104 appearances for the U’s, he was signed by Sheffield United in the summer of 2017. Since then, he established himself as a key member of the squad and helped his side get promoted to the top flight. He has been one of the major reasons for the Blades’ good performances in the 2019/20 campaign.

Lundstram would provide depth to Rangers’ midfield

At the moment, Rangers have five midfielders in their ranks. Ryan Jack has been one of their key players in the middle of the park in the last few years. Joe Aribo has also done a decent job so far. However, Glen Kamara hasn’t been consistent but he is capable of doing well.

Apart from them, the Gers have Scott Arfield and Steven Davies in midfield. Both of them are above 30 and reaching the twilight of their careers. Thus, a midfielder is a must in the summer who could take over in the next few years would be a smart investment for the Scottish giants.

In that regard, it would be wise if they make a move for Lundstram. The Englishman enjoyed an impressive 2019/20 campaign, finishing with 5 goals and 3 assists, which is the most productive season thus far in his career.

Adding Lundstram to the Gers squad would improve their squad depth, whilst he would also bring in healthy competition. He can also lead Rangers’ midfield in the future as he did with the Blades last season.

Verdict

With Arfield and Davies ageing, it is clear that the Gers are in need of midfielders. And Lundstram, who has been in fine form, can take over from the above-mentioned names once they step down. The 26-year-old has all the qualities to succeed and would provide them with added quality in the middle of the park.
