Why Pervis Estupinan could solve Tottenham’s left-back issues

As per Spanish publication La Razon (h/t The Express), Tottenham are interested in signing Watford defender Pervis Estupinan, who is currently on loan with Spanish outfit Osasuna.

Estupinan, 22, came through the ranks of LDU Quito in his homeland and featured for Udinese Calcio and Recre Granada before joining Watford’s U23 squad. He moved to Vicarage Road in the summer of 2017 but has never made a senior appearance for the Hornets.

He was sent on several loan spells before joining Osasuna again on loan last summer. Since his arrival at Osasuna, the youngster has been in good form. He has also attracted interest from Manchester United, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, as per the report.

The absence of star players like Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son before the suspension of games cost Tottenham heavily. And the other factor for their struggle is the lack of stability at the back. The defence has conceded 17 goals in the last 23 games across all competitions and it is clear that a defensive reinforcement is a must in the summer.

Estupinan – Tottenham’s left-back solution?

Apart from a central defender, the manager should also focus on strengthening the full-back position. On the right side of the defence, Serge Aurier is the only recognized player available and Ben Davies is the only left-back available at the manager’s disposal right now.

Danny Rose was sent on loan to Newcastle United in January and is likely to have no further part under Mourinho. And young Kyle Walker-Peters also is on loan with Southampton. Davies was injured for the majority of the season, forcing Tottenham to go with Ryan Sessegnon at left-back. Thus, they need to recruit a full-back in the summer.

In that regard, Estupinan would be a good signing for the North Londoners. The Ecuadorian has featured in 30 games for the Spanish mid-table outfit this season. In 27 La Liga games, he has racked up 1 goal and 4 assists, which is a good record for a player in this position. He could be a valuable addition to Mourinho’s squad as he could add depth to the squad.

Verdict

If Rose moves from the club permanently, Tottenham’s numbers at left-back would be reduced and they are already in dire need of players in that position. And Estupinan could provide competition to Davies from next season. He could also develop into a key player for Tottenham in the future under the right guidance. Thus, they should lure the Ecuadorian international to North London at the earliest.
