Why Patrik Schick would be a fantastic fit at Newcastle United

As per Daily Mail (h/t Yorkshire Post), Newcastle United are interested in signing AS Roma star Patrik Schick, who currently plies his trade with RB Leipzig in Germany on loan.

Schick, 24, came through the ranks of Sparta Praha’s youth ranks and excelled with Bohemians Prag before joining UC Sampdoria in the summer of 2016. He came to prominence with the Italian outfit when he scored 11 goals and provided 4 assists in 32 league games that season. He was then signed by Roma, a year later.

But his move to Roma didn’t pan out as planned, as he was used as an understudy to Edin Dzeko. Last summer, he moved to the Bundesliga, joining Leipzig on a loan spell where he once again returned to his best form. However, he has received limited game time, and thus, Newcastle should attempt a swift move for the Czech Republic international.

Schick could lead Newcastle in the future

One of the major reasons for Newcastle’s struggles is the lack of consistency in front of goal. They managed to score just 39 goals in 38 games. Their attacking unit has lacked the intensity despite having enough strikers upfront. Winger Allan Saint-Maximin looked to be the only bright spot in the Magpies’ frontline.

Summer signing Joelinton failed miserably, bagging only 2 goals and 2 assists throughout the league campaign. Dwight Gayle stepped up in the latter stages of the league but that wasn’t helpful for the team. Andy Carroll and Yoshinori Muto failed to find the back of the net and didn’t make any impact while coming on from the bench. Thus, a centre-forward is a must next season.

In that regard, Schick seems to be a sensible option for the club. The former Sampdoria man managed to score 10 goals in 22 league games this season as he had to fight for the spot with Chelsea’s new recruit, Timo Werner at Leipzig this season. Despite the limited game time, he has shown his qualities.

His inclusion would be a massive boost to the Magpies’ frontline and would also bring in a healthy competition to the strikers. Moreover, if he is able to continue with the fine form, Schick would be a valuable addition to Bruce’s squad.

Verdict

With a lack of quality in their attack, Newcastle are in dire need of strikers at the moment. And, at 24, Schick has a lot more to offer in the future. He can provide them with much-needed goals and can be the leader of their attack in the future. Thus, signing the Czech Republic international would be a wise decision by the club.
