Why Olivier Giroud to Newcastle United would be a splendid move

Newcastle United will require a hefty loan fee if they are to land Olivier Giroud for the rest of the season after showing interest in the Chelsea striker, as per The Telegraph.

The Frenchman will be out of contract at Chelsea at the end of the campaign, but the Blues are still insisting on a big fee for his services and his agent will also require payment.

Giroud is also on £110,000-a-week wages – more than any of Newcastle’s big earners.

Chelsea need to sign another striker this month and they can’t let anyone leave until they have bought a new player. Giroud would be an ideal signing for the Magpies and is understood to be open to the idea of making a move due to a lack of games under Frank Lampard (h/t The Telegraph).

The 33-year-old would bring all the things Newcastle need in a frontman, as he is just as effective playing with his back to the goal as he is facing it. The World Cup winner is a skilled link-man as well, someone who can bring out the best in wingers Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin – once the latter returns from injury.

Giroud proved himself to be a specialist in the Europa League last season, top-scoring in the competition that Chelsea won.

With only six months remaining on his contract, he was an unused substitute in Chelsea’s FA Cup third-round victory over Nottingham Forest last weekend, despite the fact that head coach Frank Lampard rested first-choice striker Tammy Abraham.

His last appearance was a start in the defeat to West Ham United at the end of November and Giroud has scored once in seven appearances in total for Chelsea so far this season.

After a difficult start to the term, Newcastle enjoyed a fine run under Steve Bruce to climb up the Premier League and are currently five points clear of the relegation zone. But the Magpies endured a poor run over the festive period and Bruce must bolster his squad in January.

The Frenchman has had a frustrating season so far at Chelsea, with only seven appearances for the Blues in all competitions. Both Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi are ahead of him in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle lack strikers and Giroud would be an ideal signing for them. He has the experience of playing at the top level and has also won trophies with both Arsenal and Chelsea. It would be shrewd business by the Magpies if they manage to land the French international in January.
