Why Newcastle United signing Myron Boadu would be a smart move

According to The Shields Gazette, Newcastle United are planning to rope in Myron Boadu in the summer to bolster their attacking ranks.

The report also suggests that Boadu is also attracting interest from several other Premier League clubs after breaking through his club’s senior team.

Boadu, 19, came through the youth ranks of AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands and was promoted to the first-team in 2017. In his first season in Eredivisie, he suffered from a knee injury and took part in just one league game. The following season he came across the same fate to his ankle and missed 24 games for the club.

However, after returning to the team this term, he has featured in 36 games for the club and in the process, he has racked up 19 goals and 13 assists across all competitions. He is considered to be one of Netherlands’ rising stars and his performance for the club earned him a call-up to the national squad in November, where he netted a goal on his debut against Estonia.

Meanwhile, Steve Bruce has struggled with the lack of quality in his attacking options and his team have fallen to 14th position in the league standings. The magpies have been let down by their forwards and they have scored only 24 goals in 27 games so far, which is the joint lowest in the Premier League.

Summer signing Joelinton has scored just one goal this season and has not been supported well by other strikers in their ranks. Yoshinori Muto and Andy Carroll have missed many games due to injury and former Crystal Palace man Dwight Gayle is yet to score for the Toon.

It is clear that Newcastle have been vulnerable up front and they cannot afford to continue like this next season. Hence, strengthening the attacking unit must be prioritized by the manager and Myron Boadu must be considered to add firepower to their attack.

The 19-year-old has been in good form for Alkmaar and is fourth in the list of top scorers in the Eredivisie at the moment. It is no mean feat for a teenager to step up and lead the team and he has done it constantly since his return from injury.

Predominantly a centre-forward, Boadu is also capable of doing a decent job from the left side of the frontline. He can be used in different positions according to the situation and his inclusion can also bring in a healthy completion within the squad.

Verdict

The teenager has taken the Eredivisie by storm after putting in several match-winning performances for Alkmaar and if he is able to reproduce that for Newcastle, he would be a valuable asset to the team. He has all the potential to succeed at a higher level.

Therefore, the Magpies must make no mistake in their pursuit of the 19-year-old and bring him to St. James’ Park in the summer.
