Why Marek Hamsik to Newcastle United would bolster their midfield

Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has urged the club to sign fellow countryman Marek Hamsik in an Instagram Live Q&A with teammate Rob Elliot (h/t Chronicle Live).

Hamsik, 32, flourished through the ranks of Bratislava in his homeland and joined Brescia Calcio in the summer of 2005. After two impressive seasons with Brescia, he was signed by Napoli in the summer of 2007. He became a fan favourite at the San Paolo Stadium and spent 12 years with the Naples outfit.

He was one of the best midfielders in Italy during those years and had helped Napoli lift the Italian Cup twice and the Italian Super Cup once. He moved to China with Dalian Professional in February 2019 and helped finish the 2019 season in 9th position in the league table. He is one of the most experienced players and thus, Newcastle United should make a move for him this summer.

Newcastle are currently in 13th position in the league standings and have been inconsistent in recent months. One of the chief reasons for their downfall is the lack of goals. The Magpies have managed just 24 goals in 29 games, which is the lowest in the Premier League so far. Thus, it is necessary for Bruce to bring in strikers in the summer to add firepower to their attack.

Hamsik – A leader for Newcastle United in midfield

Apart from a centre-forward, Newcastle also need to bring in reinforcements to their midfield department. Sean Longstaff, Jonjo Shelvey and Miguel Almiron are the three attack-minded midfielders in the squad. Nabil Bentaleb and Valentino Lazaro were signed on loan in January and their future at the club is still uncertain.

The midfielders have also failed miserably with only Shelvey managing to score 5 goals, making him the club’s top scorer this season. They have not supported their forwards in the right way, which has led to the team’s failure upfront. Thus, a midfielder is a must in the summer.

In that regard, signing Hamsik would be a good move. The Slovakian has made over 600 appearances and his experience could definitely be of great help to Newcastle. He had also scored 121 goals for Napoli in 12 years and that shows he is capable of banging in goals from the midfield.

Verdict

With Lazaro and Bentaleb at the club only on loan, Newcastle are in dire need of midfielders. And Hamsik could add depth and provide them with some valuable goals. At 32, he still has the energy left to play at the highest level and could be a crucial player under Bruce next season. Thus, the Magpies should make an attempt to lure the former Napoli man to St. James’ Park this summer.
