Why Newcastle United should revive their interest in Wylan Cyprien

Back in March, Chronicle Live suggested that Newcastle United were monitoring the progress of Nice star Wylan Cyprien and were interested in making a move for him in the summer.

Cyprien, 25, is a product of Lens’ youth academy. After making 112 appearances, scoring 10 goals and providing 6 assists, he made the switch to Nice in the summer of 2016. Since then, he has been a regular member of the squad and has been one of the most influential figures under Patrick Vieira this term.

He came to the limelight after joining Nice and is highly talented. He has been a key member in Nice’s squad and has made 109 appearances so far, scoring 23 goals and providing 12 assists so far.

However, he has just one more year left on his contract with the club, and the report suggests that Everton are also interested in securing the services of the talented midfielder. Thus, Newcastle should make a move for him at the earliest.

Cyprien could add depth to Newcastle’s midfield

Steve Bruce hasn’t been able to get the best out of his midfield so far. Sean Longstaff and Jonjo Shelvey are the only two attack-minded midfielders available at the manager’s disposal while Nabil Bentaleb and Valentino Lazaro are on loan.

Longstaff’s performance has declined in the last few months and Shelvey seems to be the only player in form. He is the club’s top scorer with 6 goals and none in the squad has been consistent. Thus, signing a midfielder would make sense for Newcastle.

In that regard, Cyprien would be a fantastic choice for the club. The 25-year-old has featured in 20 Ligue 1 games, racking up 7 goals and 3 assists. He is in the form of his life and his presence in Bruce’s squad would definitely bolster their midfield. He finished as the second-highest scorer for Nice this season and helped them to a 6th place finish in the league standings.

The Frenchman is a versatile player as he is capable of operating from a deeper role as well as in an advanced position. His goalscoring nature could come in handy for Newcastle, who have had a shortage of goalscoring midfielders apart from Shelvey. His inclusion to the squad would definitely bring in healthy competition.

Verdict

At 25, the Frenchman is at the right time to take his game to the next level and Newcastle adding him to the squad would certainly bolster their depth and quality. He can also provide them with some much-needed goals from the middle of the park. Thus, they should reignite their interest in Cyprien this summer.
