Why Newcastle United should revive their interest in Emmanuel Dennis

Back in April, Voetbal (h/t Yorkshire Post) suggested that Newcastle United were keen on signing Emmanuel Dennis from Club Brugge. However, no such talks have progressed in recent times.

Dennis, 22, was signed by Ukrainian outfit Zorya Luhansk in 2016 and shined for them in the league that season with 6 goals. His impressive performances earned him a move to Club Brugge and in three years in Belgium, he has already won 2 trophies.

The Nigerian came under the limelight this term after scoring two goals against Real Madrid in the Champions League and followed it up with a strike against Manchester United in the Europa League. He has established himself as one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe after his impressive season in Belgium.

Dennis could bolster Newcastle’s attack

One of the major reasons for Newcastle’s decline this season is the lack of consistency in front of goal. The Magpies have scored just 37 goals so far in the league. Summer signing Joelinton has netted just 2 goals and has performed way below expectations.

He has also not received much support from the likes of Andy Carroll and Yoshinori Muto. Carroll has been in and out of the team due to injuries and that has made their attacking unit less dangerous. Only Dwight Gayle has performed well since the restart. Thus, to sustain and prosper in the top-flight, the Magpies need to bring in a striker in the summer.

In that regard, Dennis would be a viable option for the club. The Nigerian has gone from strength to strength since his arrival in Europe. After scoring 7 goals last season, he has taken his game to the next level with 9 goals in the cut-short 2019/20 campaign. He has been Brugge’s man for the big games.

Signing Dennis would add some much-needed firepower at the top of the attack for Newcastle. Furthermore, the 22-year-old is a versatile player and can slot in on either flank and play as a wing-back as well. This would only add to the options at Steve Bruce’s disposal.

Verdict

At 22, he has a huge future ahead and could boost the Magpies’ goal tally next season. Given the misfiring nature of Newcastle’s attack, he would provide them with some much-needed depth and quality. Thus, reigniting their interest in Dennis would be a wise decision by the Magpies.
