Why Newcastle United should plot a move for Wylan Cyprien

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle United are keeping close tabs on Nice midfielder Wylan Cyprien ahead of a possible summer transfer.

Cyprien, 25, came through the ranks of Lens’ youth system and made 112 appearances for the club before moving to Nice in the summer of 2016. Since his move, he has been a regular member of the team except for the second season, where he ruptured his ligament.

Currently in his fourth season at Allianz Riviera, the midfielder has been impressive. He has been a key member in Nice’s squad and has made 109 appearances so far, scoring 23 goals and providing 12 assists so far. Given his present form, Newcastle United should attempt to sign Cyprien in the near future.

Steve Bruce’s men have been inconsistent so far and are currently 13th in the league standings after just 1 win in their last 6 games. After staying in the top half of the table until Christmas, the Magpies’ form deteriorated and they have since been looking to get back into the top 10.

The manager brought in Nabil Bentaleb and Valentino Lazaro on loan in January to boost their midfield ranks. Newcastle have a plethora of midfield talents in the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff, Matty Longstaff, Matt Ritchie and Jack. But they haven’t been up to the mark so far.

Hayden has seen a huge dip in form and has made limited contributions. Given Sean and Matty’s contributions, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them attract interest from the big clubs and if that happens, the manager should go for midfielders in the transfer window. Colback’s contract expires at the end of the season and hence, Nice’s Wylan Cyprien would be a fantastic choice for the club.

The 25-year-old has featured in 20 Ligue 1 games, racking up 7 goals and 3 assists. He is in the form of his life and could be an added bonus to Bruce’s side.

A quality central midfielder, Cyprien is capable of playing in both the deep-lying role and in the No 10 role. He has already shown his qualities and would certainly bring his best to St. James’ Park if a deal goes through.

Verdict

At 25, the French youth international is at the right time to take his game to the next level and Newcastle adding him to the squad would certainly boost their depth and quality. He can also provide them with the much-needed extra goals.

Therefore, the Magpies must make a move for Cyprien in the summer and lure him to St. James’ Park.
