Why Newcastle should sign Georginio Rutter as one for the future

According to the Mirror (h/t The Sun), Newcastle United are set to head-to-head with Premier League rivals Arsenal over the signature of Rennes teenager Georginio Rutter.

As per the report, Serie A giants AC Milan, Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and French club Lyon have also been credited with an interest in the 18-year-old centre-forward. He has only one year left to run on his current deal at Stade Rennes.

Rutter might not be on the move for the cheap, though, with a £10million figure being quoted. That’s despite the youngster not making a single competitive appearance for the French club.

Newcastle could benefit from Rutter’s potential

Georginio Rutter might not fit the bill as an immediate game-changer for Newcastle in the Premier League but his undisputed talent and potential certainly make him worth a handy long-term investment for the Magpies. The 18-year-old is yet to make his senior debut for Rennes but he impressed for the club’s B side in the French fourth-tier last season.

The highly-rated teenager has also accumulated some impressive numbers for France at the youth level, scoring 8 times in 24 appearances for the U-17s while also adding a goal in 3 outings for the U-18 side. Rutter has been widely tipped to break into the first-team picture at Rennes in Ligue 1 this season.

Newcastle already have the likes of Andy Carroll and Callum Wilson as recognised centre-forwards in their ranks, with Dwight Gayle set to return from injury later on in the campaign.

Going by that, the Magpies are under no real pressure to look at Rutter as an immediate first-team option. The 18-year-old is still very much in the developmental stage of his career. Playing for the U-23s at the Premier League 2 level will surely make a transition to the senior level a lot smoother.

Newcastle already have some exciting young attacking talents like Yannick Toure and Elias Sorensen coming through the academy ranks and it will be interesting to see how Georginio Rutter competes with them for a place in the reserves.

Verdict

Georginio Rutter seems like a real talent with plenty of untapped potential, as evident from top clubs like Leipzig, Milan, Arsenal and Lyon showing an interest in the youngster’s services. The quoted fee of £10million, though, remains a stumbling block for Newcastle, considering the player’s lack of experience at the senior level.

Nevertheless, the Magpies could have a real gem on their hands moving forward if they manage to agree a suitable fee for the highly-rated teenager before the deadline.
