Why Sergej Milinkovic-Savic would be a good signing for Tottenham

According to Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho is keen on signing in-demand Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The 25-year-old Serbian has been a regular feature within the Lazio first-team since arriving from Genk in 2015. Milinkovic-Savic’s consistent and eye-catching displays in the Serie A have made him one of the first few names on the team sheet in the last five years.

One of the stars of Serbia’s under-20 World Cup win in 2015, Milinkovic-Savic has so far featured in 194 matches for Lazio across all competitions and has 36 goals and 26 assists to his name. With his performances on the pitch improving with time, Milinkovic-Savic has been impressive for Lazio this season too, helping them to second place in the league table behind leaders Juventus.

Milinkovic-Savic has scored 5 goals and provided 7 assists from 31 matches for Lazio this term, making him an integral part of the Simone Inzaghi-led side. However, this is not the first-time Savic has turned heads due to his on-field displays.

The midfielder, who is known to have a keen eye for goal, found the back of the net seven times last season and an impressive 14 in the year before, giving a clear idea of the talent that he is.

Predominantly a central midfielder, Milinkovic-Savic’s versatility has seen him play in a variety of roles in the midfield for Lazio over the years. However, he is under contract at the Olimpico di Roma until 2024 and is valued to be around a sum of £50 million.

Milinkovic-Savic can offer Tottenham consistency

Mourinho’s Spurs endured a difficult campaign in the league so far this season, that has seen the side suffer a dip in rankings. After finishing runners-up in the Champions League last year, the North London club has fallen to 8th place in the league table mainly due to inconsistency.

Despite the side having as many as eight midfielders in its ranks, Tottenham have failed to deliver, which is very evident from their slip in the rankings this season.

They also lost creative midfielder Christian Eriksen, who moved to Inter Milan in the winter transfer window. Considering all this, it would be safe for Mourinho’s side to rope in a consistent midfielder like Milinkovic-Savic, who is a proven performer for Lazio. Hence, they should up their interests in the Serb and secure his services as soon as possible.

Except for Dele Alli, none of Tottenham’s midfielders has put up consistent displays this season. Hence, signing the talented Milinkovic-Savic will only make them stronger and help them improve their performance next season. Having featured across 150 Serie A matches, there is no questioning the midfielder’s experience, which would be useful for a struggling side like Tottenham.
