Why Max Lowe to Sheffield United would bolster their defence

According to Sky Sports, Sheffield United have completed the signing of full-back Max Lowe from Derby County.

The defender joins the Blades as part of a £15m double deal that saw both Lowe and Jayden Bogle make the switch to Bramall Lane. Both the players have signed four-year contracts with Sheffield United. (h/t Sky Sports)

Born in England, Lowe came through the ranks of Derby County’s youth system and made his senior bow in the 2016/17 campaign. However, he struggled for regular game time and was sent on different loan spells to Shrewsbury Town and Aberdeen.

He impressed with the Scottish outfit in the 2018/19 campaign, making 42 appearances and returned to his parent club last summer. Lowe featured 29 times for the Rams last season, as they finished in the 10th position in the league.

Lowe can be a vital player for Sheffield United

At the moment, the Blades have two options available on the left side of the defence. Enda Stevens has been regular and consistent for Sheffield United since his arrival at Bramall Lane in 2017. Last season, he featured in all the league games under Chris Wilder. However, he is already 30 years old.

Former Liverpool man Jack Robinson has failed to compete for the spot and made just 6 league appearances last season. Thus, signing a left-back with an eye on the future, in the form of Lowe, is the right decision by the Blades.

The 23-year-old did a fairly decent job for Derby County last season, even though he contributed with just one assist. He showed great potential during his time at Aberdeen, when he scored three goals and two assists in 42 games. This, he can be a future replacement for Stevens, who is ageing.

Lowe’s inclusion would bring in healthy competition to the squad next season, whilst also providing them with greater depth in the left-back department. Under the guidance of Wilder, the Englishman should get better with experience.
