Why Manchester need to end their pursuit of Corentin Tolisso

According to RMC Sport (h/t Daily Express), Manchester United have opened talks with Bayern Munich midfielder Corentin Tolisso.

The report claims that United have met with the 25-year-old French player’s representatives for whom Bayern are demanding at least £30million.

Meanwhile, Tolisso has endured a difficult campaign in the league this season for the Bundesliga giants, featuring just 13 times due to various injuries.

Tolisso moved to Bayern from former side Lyon back in 2017 and has featured 68 times for the Bavarians, scoring 14 goals and giving 12 assists. However, Tolisso has failed to emulate his performances from his Lyon days, where he scored 29 goals and 17 assists in 160 appearances.

The French midfielder has spent most of his time on the sidelines. Last season, he missed almost all their matches owing to a cruciate ligament rupture.

Luck seemed to have not favoured Tolisso as he was restricted to the benches this season. The Bayern midfielder, who sustained an ankle injury back in April is currently out of the side. He is not expected to return at least until the end of this month.

Tolisso an unnecessary addition for Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for three major signings ahead of next season, and Tolisso has emerged as one of their targets for the summer.

However, United are already well-stocked in the middle, with the side having as many as seven midfielders in its ranks. They recently bought Portuguese playmaker Bruno Fernandes in January from Sporting Lisbon.

The 25-year-old has been an instant hit at Old Trafford, racking up two goals and three assists from five league matches. Also, the return of star midfielder Paul Pogba following his long injury layoff gives an idea that the side are clearly not short of talented midfielders in their midst.

They also have Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic in the mix, meaning Tolisso’s arrival will only make him surplus to the club’s requirements. Hence, a move for the French midfielder seems totally unnecessary at the moment.

Verdict

Manchester United already have enough depth in their midfield and bringing in another midfield will only cost them time and money. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side should rather spend that money elsewhere and strengthen areas that need real improvement. Thus, United should halt their pursuit of Tolisso.
