Why Manchester United are wrong in avoiding Lautaro Martinez

According to The Times, Manchester United have opted out from making a move for Lautaro Martinez after their disappointment at Inter Milan’s £94m asking price for the Argentine.

The report claims that United want to sign a forward in the summer after missing out on Erling Haaland to Borussia Dortmund and are assessing a number of striking options. They also failed to replace Romelu Lukaku, who moved to Italy last summer.

Martinez, 22, who came through the ranks of Racing Club’s youth system joined Inter Milan in the summer of 2018. He initially struggled at the club but has been in good form this campaign. He has formed a strong partnership up front for the Nerazzurri alongside Lukaku.

The Argentine is a regular under Antonio Conte and has helped his side to the 2nd spot in the Serie A table. Since his debut with the national side, he has scored 9 goals in 18 games and is in red-hot form for both club and country.

Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has added some fresh faces to his attacking unit by signing winger Daniel James and centre-forward Odion Ighalo. The Welsh winger started his career at United in full swing, scoring three goals in August but since then, he hasn’t scored.

Mason Greenwood was also promoted to the senior squad and has done a brilliant job whenever called up. He has scored four goals in the league so far and has made quite an impact from the bench. But he is too young to lead the line on a regular basis. And in-form striker Marcus Rashford, who was enjoying a fruitful season with 14 goals, has been injured.

Anthony Martial, however, has performed far from his best. Despite scoring 8 goals in the league, he has not been consistent. With all these troubles, it is a must for United to recruit an established striker in the summer. And they would be making a huge mistake if they avoid signing Lautaro Martinez.

The 22-year-old has the ability to bolster the attacking ranks of any team. Despite struggling initially, this season, he has scored 16 goals for Inter in 27 games across all competitions and has also provided 4 assists.

Solskjaer has preferred youngsters throughout the season and Martinez would be a great addition in the attack alongside Rashford and James.
