Why Manchester City should keep hold of Sergio Aguero amid Inter Milan interest

According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla (h/t Manchester Evening News), Inter Milan are targeting a summer swoop for Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero. He currently earns £230,000-a-week.

Aguero’s contract with Manchester City will expire in the summer of 2021. And Inter are hoping to capitalize on the situation this summer. The Nerazzurri are eyeing the veteran striker as a potential replacement for ace goalscorer Lautaro Martinez, who has been heavily linked with an exit from the club. (h/t Manchester Evening News)

Aguero began his career at Argentine outfit Independiente, for whom he scored 18 goals in 36 matches. In 2006, Atletico Madrid signed him, which is where he shot to limelight. In five years with the Spanish outfit, the Argentine racked up 100 goals in 230 appearances, before joining Manchester City in 2011. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Aguero is a Manchester City legend

During his time at the Etihad Stadium, Aguero not only helped the club usher in a new era laden with trophies but also established himself as one of the greatest strikers to have ever played in the Premier League.

Till date, Aguero has managed 368 appearances for the Cityzens and has scored 254 goals, becoming the all-time leading goalscorer for the club. He also has 72 assists to go along with.

Manchester City haven’t had the best of 2019/20 campaign, particularly in the Premier League, where they have been left miles behind by league leaders and champions-elect Liverpool. But Aguero has continued on his merry ways, banging in 16 goals in 22 Premier League matches.

In addition, he scored three goals in City’s Carabao Cup triumph, including one in the final against Aston Villa. He also has two goals each in the FA Cup and the Champions League.

For six seasons running, Aguero has been Manchester City’s top goalscorer in the Premier League, including the ongoing season. In comparison, second-choice striker Gabriel Jesus has 10 league goals to his name this term. And apart from these two, manager Pep Guardiola does not have any other striker at his disposal.

Given how strong Aguero is going despite turning 31 years old, City should hold on to him in the summer. With the finances likely to be impacted this summer, they may not be able to bring in a world-class replacement for the Argentine either.

Hence, it would make sense for the club to keep hold of their ace goalscorer for another campaign at least.

Verdict

Aguero, at 31, is still Manchester City’s best striker by some distance. They are losing a senior figure in David Silva in the summer. And allowing Aguero also to leave would not be the best idea.

Furthermore, their transfer plans are likely to be hampered this summer because of the financial impact of coronavirus, coupled with their European ban. Hence it is important for the Cityzens to keep hold of him.
