Why Manchester City should go all out to sign David Raya

According to 90min (h/t The Sun), Manchester City are plotting a move for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya in the summer.

Raya, 24, spent time at the academy of UE Cornella before joining Blackburn Rovers in 2012. Having progressed through the Riversiders’ youth system, he struggled for game time and was sent on loan to Southport FC. But just a month later, he returned to his parent club.

He had to wait for his chance and then became the first-choice goalkeeper for Blackburn in his last two seasons with the club. His impressive performances earned him a move to Brentford last summer and the Spaniard has been in sensational form this season, helping his side reach the playoffs in their quest for top-flight promotion.

His eye-catching displays have also attracted the attention of Premier League rivals Arsenal, as per the report.

Raya could add depth to Manchester City’s goalkeeping department

One area that Pep Guardiola should focus on addressing is the goalkeeping department. Brazilian shot-stopper Ederson has been the first-choice in goal since his arrival. Though he has done well so far, the former Benfica man’s errors had cost them a lot this season.

Apart from him, Claudio Bravo is the only established goalkeeper available at the manager’s disposal. But the Chilean has disappointed in the last couple of seasons and has featured in just 7 league games since Ederson’s arrival.

The former Barcelona man’s contract is also set to expire at the end of the season and he could leave this month. This would reduce City’s numbers at the back. Thus, a goalkeeper is a must in the upcoming transfer window.

In that regard, signing Raya would be a smart addition by the Cityzens. The Spaniard has been in sensational form this season, keeping 16 clean sheets in 48 league games, while conceding just 38 goals. He has been a key figure in Brentford’s promotion chase and has been one of their best players.

With Bravo set to leave, Raya would be a good replacement and he could also bring in healthy competition for Ederson as he is in the form of his life. And his inclusion would also enable City to keep their squad depth intact.

Verdict

At 24, the Spaniard has a huge future ahead of him and can be seen as a good back-up for City. He would definitely bring his qualities and if he is able to replicate the same form. Thus, they should manage to lure Raya to Etihad this summer.
