Why Manchester City should complete a move for Jose Gimenez
Reports from Italian news outlets (h/t The Sun) suggest that Manchester City are in the pursuit of Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez. It also says that a bid for the player has also been rejected by Atleti.
Despite the setback, it is expected that Guardiola will return with another offer as he looks to reinforce his defensive options after the signing of Nathan Ake (source – The Sun) in August.
Profile
Jose Maria Gimenez started his career in native Danubio before making the switch to Atletico in 2013.
Since then, the 25-year-old Uruguayan has been ever-present for the Rojiblancos as a part of their famed defensive robustness. Despite the departure of defensive partner Diego Godin, he has continued with his performances.
He is one of the most reliable centre-backs currently. Strong in the air as well as sturdy in the tackle, at just 25 years of age, he has the potential to become one of the best in the business.
Do Manchester City need Gimenez?
After a season of relative disappointment, City will be looking to bounce back in emphatic fashion. They can point to the fact that Aymeric Laporte missed a total of 30 games last season through injury, which coincided with their bad form.
However, no such excuses can be made this time as they have already brought in Nathan Ake.
Gimenez is right-footed and should work well with Laporte beside him. While Fernandinho deputised at centre-back last season, he looked overpowered and left behind by opposition attackers on most occasions. You can’t really blame him as he doesn’t have the physique or age to play in that position.

Verdict
Manchester City should definitely pursue this deal to bolster their defence. The South American is an experienced defender and would be a good addition to City’s backline.
Gimenez has got more years left in him and can build a very strong partnership with Laporte for years to come.
