Why Manchester City should avoid signing Alexis Sanchez

According to Daily Star, Manchester City are looking to make an attempt to sign Manchester United flop Alexis Sanchez, who is currently on loan with Inter Milan in Serie A.

Sanchez, 31, came to prominence during his time at Barcelona, where he won several trophies including a la Liga title, two Spanish Super Cups and a UEFA Super Cup. After making 141 appearances for the Catalan giants, Arsenal made a move for the Chilean.

In his three and a half seasons with the Gunners, he made 166 appearances and played a crucial role in two FA Cup-winning campaigns. He then moved to Manchester United in a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan in January 2018 but since then, he hasn’t been the same. His loan to move to Inter Milan hasn’t helped him regain his best form either. Thus, City should keep their eyes off the Chile international.

Sanchez is way past his best days

Pep Guardiola’s men haven’t been the same dominant force they once used to be in the previous title-winning campaigns. They have failed to defend the league title this term and have succumbed to the dominance of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

They were also dumped out of the FA Cup last week but there is a lot of positivity to take from the campaign. They are still in the hunt for the Champions League and also won the League Cup earlier in the campaign. However, the manager knows there is a lot of work to be done ahead of next season.

They need to bring in reinforcements to the squad if they are to lift themselves and return to their best next season. However, United’s Sanchez would not be a good option for the club. They already have two in-form strikers in Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero in their ranks.

Despite struggling with injuries, Aguero is still their second-highest scorer with 16 goals. The Argentine has established himself as a world-class striker with City and still seems to be going strong. And Jesus has already racked up 13 goals and 8 assists this season. Thus, bringing in the former Arsenal man would not be a wise decision by the club.

The 31-year-old has failed in the Premier League in the last two seasons and is way behind his best days at the moment. He has managed to rack up just 3 goals and 9 assists so far in his loan spell. Signing him would only be a waste for Manchester City.

Verdict

City have done well in the last few seasons with Aguero and Jesus and have not faced a shortage in their attacking unit. And at 32, Sanchez seems to be on the decline. Thus, they should opt out of making a move for the Chilean.
