Why Man United should make a move for Dayot Upamecano

Manchester United are slowly taking steps in the transfer market with the signing of Donny Van de Beek and are now looking to sign young RB Leipzig centre-back, Dayot Upamecano, as reported by ESPN.

It was expected that Manchester United would make the centre-back position a priority after some horrific showings in a few games that ultimately cost them a shot at silverware. Club captain Harry Maguire has definitely improved the backline but serious doubts remain over the likes of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.

Two years later, he made the switch to Germany and has since improved by leaps and bounds to become one of the first names in Julian Nagelsmann’s side. The youngster was a part of Leipzig’s dream Champions League campaign last season where they made it to the semi-finals.

Do the Red Devils need him?

Manchester United had a fairly good season aided by their new signings Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Bruno Fernandes. Yet, they fell short of a realistic shot at silverware when they were eliminated in three semi-finals.

With most of the first team performing rather well, there still remains room for improvement, especially in defence. Maguire has been decent except for the occasional blip but the rest have looked quite shaky.

Victor Lindelof was committing unnatural errors and Eric Bailly had yet another injury-plagued season. Axel Tuanzebe still looks an unfinished product and the less said about Phil Jones, the better. Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo are likely to be shipped out after their loan spells.

It is safe to say Manchester United could do with a centre-back of Upamecano’s calibre. He is young, hungry and looks the perfect fit for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United rebuild.

Verdict

Upamecano is a perfect option for the Manchester club given his age and performances over the last year. Solskjaer would hate to miss out on a defender of his calibre and they must sign Upamecano now that they have wrapped up the Van de Beek deal.
