Why Macauley Bonne to Norwich City would bolster their attack

According to The Sun (h/t The Pink Un), Norwich City are monitoring Charlton Athletic star Macauley Bonne ahead of a potential summer move.

Bonne, 24, spent time at the academies of Ipswich Town and Norwich before rising through the ranks of Colchester United’s youth team. However, he spent most of his Colchester career on loan spells. He featured for clubs like Lincoln City and Woking FC before joining Leyton Orient in the summer of 2017.

He became an instant hit at The Breyer Group Stadium, scoring 22 and 23 goals respectively in each of the two league campaigns. His impressive performances earned him a move to The Valley last summer and he has been one of their best players despite the club getting relegated to League One.

The report also suggests that clubs like Fulham, Burnley and Cardiff City are also interested in signing Bonne this summer.

The Canaries haven’t managed to secure top-flight status after an unconvincing campaign. Daniel Farke’s men haven’t been at their best and have lacked the intensity. Their failure as a team led them to a downfall as they finished at the bottom of the league standings.

However, with the season done and dusted, the club have to bring in reinforcements to the squad in order to fight their way back to the Premier League.

Bonne could be a solid signing for Norwich

One of the chief reasons for the Canaries’ downfall is the lack of consistency in front of goal. Farke’s men managed to score just 29 goals in 38 games, which is poor according to the Premier League standards. Star striker Teemu Pukki scored 11 goals and Todd Cantwell was the only other player to score more than one goal in the team.

Second-choice striker Josip Drmic failed in the limited opportunities he received. He hasn’t been able to support Pukki well and has also struggled a lot with injuries. Thus, a centre-forward is a must if they are to be at the top of the Championship next season.

To that end, signing Bonne would help them secure the future of their attacking unit. The Zimbabwean international has been in sensational form in the last few years. After scoring plenty of goals for Leyton, he continued with the fine form into the Championship, bagging 11 goals for the Addicks.

He could be a crucial player for Farke next season as he has already done enough to prove himself in his debut season in the Championship. He would definitely bring healthy competition to the squad, whilst also adding some much-needed firepower too. He could also take over from Pukki, who is already 30 and reaching the rear end of his career.

Verdict

With Drmic completely out of form, the Canaries have been left with only one established striker. This could spell trouble for them in their pursuit of promotion next season. And Bonne could also help them scale great heights if he is able to continue with the fine form. Thus, signing the Zimbabwean would be a smart move by the club.
