Why Luka Jovic to Newcastle United would bolster their attack

According to The Sun, Newcastle United have joined the £62m race for Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old came through the ranks of Red Star Belgrade’s youth system before moving to Benfica in January 2016. After half a season in the Portuguese league, he joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan initially.

He became an instant hit once his move was made permanent and attracted interests from several clubs but Real Madrid were able to snap him up last summer.

However, his time at Santiago Bernabeu has not been successful as he failed to convince boss Zinedine Zidane. He has received limited game time and thus, Newcastle United should take advantage of his situation and secure his services.

The Magpies, meanwhile, have endured a mixed campaign so far. After starting the season on a good note, they have fallen out of the top half of the table. Steve Bruce’s men have won just 2 of their last 11 league games. They have crashed out of the EFL cup competition too.

They have been inconsistent throughout the season and the manager had to do with a lot of injuries. The attacking unit has been poor, while their midfield has also not been up to the mark except for Jonjo Shelvey. He is their top scorer with 5 goals in the league.

With a lack of quality in every department, Bruce must look to bring in changes after the takeover is done. They need to recruit in-form players if they are to do better going forward.

Jovic could bolster Newcastle’s attack

One of the key areas which Bruce should focus on strengthening is the striking department. Joelinton, Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Yoshinori Muto are the four strikers available at the manager’s disposal.

Summer signing Joelinton hasn’t lived up to the expectations, scoring just 1 goal in 29 league games. He has not been able to settle to the conditions of the Premier League. Other centre-forwards have also failed to score a goal and as a result, the Magpies have just 25 goals so far, which is the joint-lowest this season.

In that regard, signing Luka Jovic could be a massive boost for the team. He might not be at his best due to the limited game time he has received but he can be effective for any team. He was instrumental for Frankfurt last season, scoring 30 goals in 55 games and helping his side reach the semi-finals of the Europa League last season.

The Serbian international could provide quality up front and his inclusion would certainly bring healthy competition. He could also help boost the performance of Joelinton by playing alongside him. If Jovic is able to regain his form from last season, he would be a valuable member of the squad.

Verdict

Jovic is just 22 and has a long way to go in his career. At the same time, the Magpies need to bolster their attack by bringing new faces. The Real Madrid man could provide them with the much-needed depth. Thus, Newcastle should make a move for the Serbia international this summer.
