Why losing Danny Rose on a loan could be detrimental for Tottenham Hotspur this season

According to a report from Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are discussing terms regarding a possible loan deal which would see Danny Rose move to Schalke this season.

At a time when their London rivals West Ham, Fulham and Arsenal have been busy making new signings, Spurs have endured a rather lacklustre transfer window. They are yet to complete a single deal and it looks like they will go into the new season without making any significant additions to their squad.

On the bright side, they haven’t lost any of their first-team stars either but that could change if they sanction a loan deal for Rose. Over the course of the last season, the talented left-back found it quite tough to play regularly.

After his explosive comments questioning the club’s wage structure, he picked up an injury which kept him sidelined for a good majority of the season. However, even when he was fit, the Ben Davies’ sublime form kept him out of the starting XI.

Despite playing limited minutes, Rose was a part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the recently concluded World Cup in Russia. He put in some fine performances and Tottenham must provide him with another chance.

More than anything else, they cannot afford to risk losing him even on a temporary basis, considering the fact that they have failed to complete a single deal this summer. Of course, Davies might continue playing the first-choice role but what will happen when he succumbs to an injury?

Presumably, even if Davies does manage to stay away from injuries, it is impossible to expect him to deliver top-class performances as Tottenham will compete in multiple tournaments this season.

When compared to Rose, Davies contributes more while going forward and is known for his marauding runs up and down the left side. However, when it comes to the defensive aspects of the game, Rose is a solid wall and that was evident from his displays in Russia.

Hence, it would be detrimental for Tottenham to let Rose leave on loan at this point. They have not made any new signings and as it is, they only have two recognized left-back options. Davies’ form will take a massive hit if he is expected to play week in and week out, thus making it necessary for Spurs to retain Rose’s services.
