Why Milan Skriniar would be a good signing for Liverpool

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have expressed an interest in Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar.

The 25-year-old centre-back is one of the few first names on the teamsheet under Italian boss Antonio Conte and has featured in all except one of their 25 league outings.

With eight clean sheets to his name in the league, Skriniar has been rock-solid at the back for Inter Milan that has seen them emerge as the side with the second-best defensive record in the league alongside leaders Juventus.

The Inter Milan defence mainly involving Skriniar has conceded just 24 goals, helping them to third place in the league standings this season. To date, he has made 119 appearances for the Serie A side since moving from Sampdoria in the summer of 2017.

Skriniar can bolster Liverpool at the back

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have been credited with an interest in Skriniar, who is valued at around £45million by Inter Milan. His performances have not only attracted the Reds but their league rivals Manchester United and Manchester City too.

The Reds, on the other hand, have been defensively the best side in the Premier League, having conceded just 21 goals from 29 matches. The centre-back partnership involving Virgil van Dijk and youngster Joe Gomez has done a stellar job that has seen them emerge as the leaders in the league this term.

They also have Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip as back-up. However, the two have struggled with injuries this season. This basically opened the doors for Gomez, who has now established himself as the side’s first-choice man alongside Van Dijk.

Moreover, Lovren has been the subject of transfer speculation in recent times, with Serie A side Roma showing an interest in him. He will turn 31 next month and is clearly not the defender that he once was in his prime.

That said, Liverpool could do with a defender like Skriniar, who is at the top of his game. His arrival will certainly add quality to the Reds backline. Hence, they should push ahead with their attempts to sign him.

Liverpool currently are well-stacked at the back and Skriniar’s arrival will only make them stronger. With Lovren showing signs of ageing and Matip consistently troubled by injuries, Liverpool roping in Skriniar seems like a safe bet.
