Why Leicester City should make a move for Ugurcan Cakir

According to Leicestershire Live, Leicester City are interested in signing Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, who could leave the Turkish outfit in the summer.

Cakir, 23, came through the ranks of Trabzonspor’s youth system but could not break into the first-team. As a result, he was sent on loan to 1461 Trabzon and returned in the summer of 2016. He became a regular member of the squad last season and has made over 60 appearances for the club.

The Turkish international has already made 25 appearances in the league this term, conceding only 27 goals and helping them to the top of the Super Lig table with 4 clean sheets. And the report suggests that Trabzonspor are looking to sell Cakir, who has also attracted interest from Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Leicester City have been impressive under Brendan Rodgers this term. They started the season on a high note and their attacking unit consisting of Jamie Vardy, Harvey Barnes, Youri Tielemans and James Maddison has done a wonderful job. They have scored 58 goals in 29 games and are currently 3rd in the league standings.

The Foxes’ defensive unit also has been up to the mark, with the likes of Caglar Soyuncu, Jonny Evans, Ricardo Pereira and Ben Chilwell performing well. They have conceded only 28 goals, which is the third-best defensive record in England’s top-flight.

At the same time, goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has been brilliant throughout the campaign behind the immovable backline. He has been with the club since 2011 and has been one of the key players in Leicester rise to the top, having already helped them lift the Premier League title in the 2015/16 season.

However, the Foxes boss Brendan manager should be aware that Schmeichel is already 33 and should look to bring in reinforcements for the future. Though the Danish international has some years left to play at the highest level, the club should think about the future once Schmeichel is done. They have Danny Ward in their ranks but the Welshman hasn’t been competitive enough.

Therefore, they should look to bring in Ugurcan Cakir from Trabzonspor in the summer and add depth to their goalkeeping department.

The 23-year-old is in the form of his life and has been one of Trabzonspor’s best players in the last two seasons. In 67 appearances for the club, he has kept 13 clean sheets and has a huge future ahead of him. He could be a smart addition to Leicester in the summer as he is one of the emerging goalkeepers in Europe.

Cakir’s impressive performances also earned him a call-up to the Turkish national squad and he has made two appearances since March 2019. He is still young and could be a huge boost for Leicester given the goalkeeping qualities he has shown throughout the campaign.

Verdict

The Turkish international could be a good option to compete for the No: 1 position with Schmeichel at Leicester City. He has all the abilities to become a top shot-stopper and could be a player for the Foxes in the future if he is able to replicate his current form.

Therefore, Leicester should make a move for Cakir, who can be a successor to the Danish international at the King Power Stadium.
