Why Leeds United should make a move for Marcos Senesi

According to Leeds Live, Leeds United are interested in signing Feyenoord star Marcos Senesi ahead of the next season.

Senesi, 23, came through the ranks of San Lorenzo’s youth system in his homeland, Argentina, and made 69 appearances for the Argentine outfit before joining Feyenoord last summer. Though he initially struggled to get into the team, he became a regular member of Dick Advocaat’s squad before the Dutch league was called off due to the pandemic.

His impressive performances also earned a call up to the Argentine U23 squad as he made his debut last September. He had been brilliant in the second half of the campaign as he helped his side to the third position in the Eredivisie standings.

Last month, The Mirror (h/t Liverpool Echo) claimed that Everton, Getafe and Sevilla were also keen on signing the youngster. Thus, Leeds should make a swift move for the centre-back.

The Whites, meanwhile, have been promoted to the Premier League as they managed to lift the Championship title under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa. They have been brilliant in the last two seasons and have returned to the top flight after a 16-year gap.

However, the manager should look to strengthen the squad if they are to sustain and prolong in the top flight. And improving the depth in the squad would help them perform better at a higher level.

Senesi could be a future leader in Leeds’ defence

One key area where the manager should focus on strengthening is the backline. The Whites were brilliant at the back as they conceded just 35 goals throughout the season. Ben White and club captain Liam Cooper formed a strong partnership in the heart of the defence.

However, White has returned to Brighton after his year-long loan spell came to an end, leaving Bielsa with just two centre-back option at his disposal. The other central defender is Gaetano Berardi, who has been out of the squad for the majority of the campaign. Thus, Leeds need to bring in a centre-back with a view for the future.

In that regard, Senesi would be a smart addition to their backline. The Argentine had been in sensational form in the 2019/20 season and has firmly established himself as a key part of Advocaat’s side. He has gone from strength to strength in the last few seasons and can grow into a leader in Leeds’ defence in the future.

He can form a strong partnership with Cooper in the absence of White and can develop himself under the guidance of Bielsa. His inclusion to the squad would also provide them with some much-needed depth and quality in the centre-back department.

Verdict

With White returning to his parent club and Berardi out of form, Leeds are in dire need of centre-backs. And Senesi has shown immense potentials so far. He can go on to represent them in the long run if he is able to continue with the fine form. Thus, signing the Argentine for £18m would be a wise decision by the club.
