Why Leeds United loaning out Mateusz Bogusz is ideal for both parties

According to Leeds Live, Leeds United starlet Mateusz Bogusz sealed a deadline day loan move to Spanish second-tier club UD Logrones for the entirety of the 2020-21 campaign.

Mateusz Bogusz caught the eye for his boyhood club Ruch Chorzow in the Polish second and third tiers before joining Leeds United in January 2019. The highly-rated attacking midfielder featured regularly for the Whites’ U-23 side during the second half of the 2018-19 campaign, winning the Professional Development League in the process.

The Polish U-21 international was handed his senior debut in an EFL Cup tie against Stoke City back in August 2019. Bogusz made the cut for several matchday squads in the Championship last season before making his league bow for the Whites on the final day of the campaign against Charlton Athletic.

Bogusz’s most recent outing for Leeds came when he started in the penalty-shootout defeat to Hull City in the EFL Cup last month.

Bogusz needs regular playtime to blossom

Leeds United currently do not have much depth in their midfield options beyond regular starters, Mateusz Klich, Pablo Hernandez, and Kalvin Phillips, with the injury to Hernandez early in the campaign further exposing the club’s lack of quality alternatives.

The Whites have relied on the versatility of Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo Moreno to fill the void left by the injury to veteran playmaker Hernandez. Bielsa also used the likes of Jamie Shackleton and Stuart Dallas in the middle of the park last season in the Championship, and he might resort to similar tactics again if Klich needs a breather for a game or two.

One might argue that it would have been a good idea for Leeds to keep a talented youngster like Bogusz in the ranks, considering his versatility to play in both No.10 and No.8 roles in the midfield.

The youngster would, of course, have played a bit-part role had he stayed put at Elland Road, but a loan move to the Spanish second-tier looks like a better option at this stage of his career.

The 19-year-old’s prospects of playing regular first-team football certainly look better at Logrones and he needs that to further his development. That wouldn’t have been possible at Leeds and it will be interesting to see how Bogusz copes with the challenge of playing in a different league out of his comfort zone.

Verdict

Leeds have a massive prospect on their hands in Mateusz Bogusz and they need to chalk out the right course of development for the Polish starlet, having tied him down to a long-term deal earlier in the summer. A productive loan spell in the Spanish second-tier would certainly do his confidence a world of good and prepare him for life in the Premier League moving forward.
