Why Kieran Tierney could solve the left-back issues of Leicester City

As per The Transfer Window Podcast (h/t The Sun), Leicester City are planning to rope in Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney to replace Ben Chilwell, who is targeted by several big teams in England.

Tierney, 22, came through the ranks of Celtic’s youth academy. His major breakthrough came in the 2015/16 season, following which he immediately established himself as a key member of the Hoops first-team. The youngster went on to win five Scottish Premiership titles and three Scottish FA Cups and League Cups each.

His impressive performances earned him a move to Arsenal last summer but Tierney is yet to make a name for himself in the Premier League. Though he has struggled with injuries, he has done well in the few games he featured. Thus, Leicester should make a move for the left-back this summer.

The Foxes, meanwhile, have been brilliant throughout the campaign. Brendan Rodgers has done a stellar job in his first full season in charge of the club. Though they have been dumped out of the EFL Cup, they are still in the race to reach the finals of the FA Cup and their performance in the league has been outstanding.

However, Rodgers should bring in reinforcements to the squad if they are to go further in the Champions League next season. The manager should make sure they have the required depth in every area.

Tierney- A future left-back replacement for Chilwell

One area where they should look to bring in fresh faces is the left-back position. Chilwell and Christian Fuchs are the two left-backs available at the manager’s disposal. However, since the Englishman was promoted to the Foxes’ first-team, he has been the first-choice on the left side of the defence.

He has been brilliant in the last two campaigns and has established himself as one of the hottest properties in English football. Chilwell has attracted strong interests from Chelsea and Manchester City and could be on his way of King Power Stadium next season, as per Leicestershire Live. And Fuchs is already 34 and reaching the back end of his career.

In that regard, signing Tierney would be the best option by the club. The Scottish international has gone from strength to strength in the past two years, except for this season as he has been deprived of chances due to injuries. He has the ability to succeed at a higher level and would be a long-term prospect for Leicester.

Verdict

With Chilwell likely to depart, the Foxes would be left without quality at left-back. And Tierney can provide them with the much-needed depth in the position. He is capable of doing well at both ends of the pitch. He had already been a top player under Rodgers at Celtic and that combination can once again flourish at Leicester also.
