Why John Fleck to Rangers would boost their midfield

According to Sky Sports, Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck has admitted about his desire to return to Rangers in the future.

Fleck, 28, is a product of Rangers’ youth academy. After seeing limited opportunities at Ibrox, he went on loan to Blackpool before joining Coventry City in 2012. At St. Andrews’ Stadium, the midfielder became an influential member and his performances earned him a move to Sheffield United in 2016.

He was impressive in the Blades’ promotion to the Championship in his first season where he contributed with 4 goals and 17 assists. Two years later, Fleck played a key role in helping the club get promoted to the Premier League and has established himself as one of the best midfielders this term. Thus, Rangers should make a move for him at the earliest.

The Gers, meanwhile, have lost in their quest to win the Scottish League title despite starting on a strong note under Steven Gerrard this term. Though they have a well-built team, Rangers have failed to stop Celtic’s dominance in the country.

After losing to their rivals in the League Cup final in December, they are currently 13 points behind the Hoops in the league table. Rangers’ only hope to lift a title in the Europa League, where they are trailing after the first leg against Bayer Leverkusen.

However, it is time for the Gers boss Gerrard to bring in changes to squad if they are to do better in the next campaign. The Scottish giants need to make sure that they have depth in each area.

Fleck could be a leader in midfield for Celtic

One key area which the manager should focus on strengthening is the midfield. Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield and Joe Aribo are the three attack-minded midfielders available at the manager’s disposal.

While all of them have been regular starters, Jack has struggled with injuries throughout the campaign. Arfield has led the team brilliantly, but Aribo has not been consistent, even though he has racked up 3 goals and 8 assists. Moreover, Steven Davies is already 35 and reaching the back end of his career.

In that regard, signing Fleck would be a massive boost to the squad. The Scotsman has been one of the key players in the Blades’ surprising performances in the Premier League. In 25 league games this term, he has already scored 5 goals and provided 2 assists.

Verdict

At 28, Fleck has a lot more to offer at a higher level and Rangers should be able to enjoy his best as he is in the form of his life. With Davies and Arfield ageing, they need to bring in experienced players and Fleck suits the bill perfectly. Thus, Rangers should make a move for the Scottish international at the earliest.
