Why Joan Jordan would be a fantastic signing for Arsenal in January

According to The Sun, Arsenal are lining up an audacious raid on Sevilla for midfielder Joan Jordan heading into the January transfer window as Mikel Arteta looks to get the club’s campaign back on track.

As per the report, the Gunners have been tracking the 26-year-old’s progress over the past three years and are prepared to hand Arteta the necessary funds to orchestrate a deal for the Spaniard next month. Jordan’s buy-out clause at Sevilla stands at a mammoth £55million but the La Liga outfit are prepared to listen to offers in the region of £32million

Jordan started his career at Espanyol and impressed on loan at Real Valladolid in the second-tier before moving to Eibar in 2017. He reached great heights during his two seasons at the club and established himself as one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the La Liga. Jordan’s impressive returns of 10 goals and 8 assists in 75 appearances for Eibar paved the way for a £13million move to Sevilla in 2019.

The 26-year-old quickly established himself as a key player for the Andalusian club, making 47 appearances in all competitions in his debut season. Jordan was instrumental as Sevilla won the Europa League crown and finished 4th in the La Liga. The Spaniard has continued to impress as one of the mainstays of Sevilla’s midfield this term as well.

After a torrid start to the campaign, the Gunners have lost 8 of their 17 league fixtures so far, accumulating just 23 points in the process.

However, transfer spark in January could well hold the key to Arsenal’s hopes of rescuing their season. With just 20 goals scored so far, bringing in reinforcements up top should be high on the club’s agenda as they bid to repair their misfiring forward line. Truth be told, however, the Gunners are in need of restructuring several departments.

Putting things into perspective, a potential deal for Joan Jordan next month would undoubtedly hand a boost to Arsenal’s campaign. The Gunners spent on Thomas Partey to bolster their midfield in the summer but the Ghanaian hasn’t quite made the impact many would have been hoping for.

Partey has failed to establish himself as a key player in the set-up, having started just 4 times in the PL so far due to injury troubles. Arteta has largely relied on the likes of Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny in central midfield but neither has done an awful lot to justify the manager’s choice. With Real Madrid loanee Dani Ceballos also failing to impress, Arsenal can certainly do with some upgrades in the middle of the park.

Joan Jordan, to that end, would be a fantastic addition to a Gunners’ midfield that has often lacked the desired energy and creativity to impact games. While essentially a combative box-to-box midfielder, the Spaniard also excels with his passing vision and ability to switch the play. A good shooter from distance, he is also capable of creating chances from dead-ball situations. (h/t The Sun)

Verdict

Joan Jordan ticks plenty of boxes at the Emirates as a dynamic midfielder with a wide range of qualities. The Spaniard has been a consistent performer in his homeland over the past few years while he also proved his worth in Sevilla’s Europa League triumph last time around.
