Why James Tarkowski would be a solid addition to Leicester City

As per Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet (h/t Leicestershire Live), Leicester City have targeted Burnley defender James Tarkowski ahead of the summer transfer if they fail to land Jannik Vestergaard.

Tarkowski, 27, rose through the ranks of Oldham Athletic’s youth system. After three years with the Latics, he joined Brentford and made a name for himself. He played a crucial role in helping the Bees get promoted to the Championship in the 2014/15 season. A year later, he led Brentford to the Championship play-offs.

After impressing at Griffin Park, he was signed by Burnley in February 2016 and since then, he has been a regular member of the squad. His eye-catching displays have also earned him a call-up to the national squad as he made his England debut in March 2018. He has been in fine form in the past few years. Thus, the Foxes should make a move for him this summer.

Meanwhile, Jamie Vardy has led the Foxes brilliantly, scoring 19 goals so far in the league. Leicester’s midfield, which consists of James Maddison, Youri Tielemans and Wilfred Ndidi, has also been at its best. They are in the right direction to qualify for the Champions League next season.

However, with the season nearing its end, the manager should look to strengthen the squad if they are to challenge for various titles in the new campaign.

Tarkowski could add depth to Leicester’s defence

After selling Harry Maguire for a commendable fee last summer, the Foxes failed to bring in a replacement. However, that has not stopped them from putting in brilliant performances. Caglar Soyuncu, who was the fourth-choice centre-back last term, has done justice to his selection.

The Turkish youngster has formed a strong partnership with Jonny Evans and the duo has let in just 28 goals so far, boasting of the third-best defensive unit in the league. However, Evans is already 32 and Wes Morgan is 36. They are reaching the back end of their careers. Thus, Leicester have to fill the void that would be left soon.

In that regard, signing Tarkowski would help Leicester stock up their defensive unit for a few years. The English international has made nearly 300 appearances and his experience would be a massive boost for the squad. He hadn’t missed a single game prior to the suspension, a period where Burnley endured a good run of form. In the last 7 games, he helped his side keep 7 clean sheets.
