Why Burnley extending Robbie Brady’s contract is the right decision by the club
As per a report from Sky Sports, Burnley have decided to extend the stay of Robbie Brady at the club till 2021, by triggering an option in the Irishman’s contract. The 28-year-old’s deal was set to expire at the end of next month, but he will now stay at the Turf Moor for another year.
A product of the Manchester United academy, Brady made just one first-team appearance for the Red Devils. Having joined Hull City on loan in 2011, the Irishman made the transfer permanent in January 2013 and went on to make 123 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals and assisting 21 more.
In the summer of 2015, Brady signed for Norwich City, where he spent 18 months during which he contributed with 7 goals and 8 assists in 62 appearances. Having joined Burnley in January 2017, the 28-year-old has endured an injury-riddled stint so far. He has made 63 appearances for the Clarets till date, bagging 5 goals and 8 assists.
Burnley need to hold on to players amid financial crisis
For Burnley to kick on better next season, the squad needs to be strengthened in a number of areas. But that might not be entirely possible due to the fact that their finances, like every other club, could be hit hard due to the coronavirus crisis.
In the circumstances, Burnley need to ensure that they keep hold of their current players as they might not be able to invest heavily in the transfer window. Hence, deciding to extend Brady’s stay at Turf Moor by another year is a smart move by the club.
While he has missed a large chunk of games this term, Brady has done well when fit and available. In 14 Premier League games in 2019/20, the Republic of Ireland international has scored one goal and created two more. The 28-year-old is primarily a left-sided midfielder but can play on the right flank too, as he has done on four occasions this term. He can provide cover at left-back too.
This versatility that he offers the manager makes Brady an asset for Burnley. Especially at a time when another winger, Aaron Lennon, is out of contract next month, while Dwight McNeil has been linked with an exit.
