Why Everton should take punt on Torino defender Gleison Bremer

According to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), Everton are prepared to step up their pursuit of Brazilian centre-back Gleison Bremer, who currently plies his trade with Torino in the Italian Serie A.

As per the report, Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti is keen to add more depth to his backline and has identified Bremer as someone who fits the bill. Everton have also been linked with a loan move for Chelsea graduate Fikayo Tomoi, but the youngster remains a part of Frank Lampard’s plans at Stamford Bridge.

It has also been claimed that Bremer, 23, is open to a move to English football, although the report doesn’t mention any asking price from Torino’s side.

Profile

Gleison Bremer started his professional career with Atletico Mineiro in his native Brazil after spending time on loan at Sao Paulo as a youngster. The talented centre-back made 26 first-team appearances for his boyhood club before completing a move to Europe with Italian club Torino back in the summer of 2018.

The 23-year-old featured only 5 times in the Serie A over the course of a rather quiet debut season but established himself as a key player at the back last season. Bremer started 27 league games last season, scoring thrice and registering an assist, as Torino finished 16th in the standings and narrowly avoided relegation.

Everton can benefit from Bremer’s potential

Everton currently have Michael Keane and Yerry Mina as their first-choice central defensive pairing with Mason Holgate and teenager Jarrad Branthwaite providing cover and competition. However, both Holgate and Branthwaite are currently on the treatment table, thus leaving Ancelotti with very little cover beyond Keane and Mina.

Irrespective of that, there’s certainly enough room for a fifth centre-back to come through the door at Goodison Park and challenge for a place in the pecking order.

The Toffees need some extra cover at the back, taking into account the fixture congestion in the PL until Christmas due to the delayed start to the season. Add to that the rigours of competing in the domestic cup later in the campaign and squad depth could be a decisive factor.

Suffice to say, Everton need to bring in another centre-back after conceding 56 goals in the league last season. Gleison Bremer ticks the box as a young and hungry defender with potential.

The Brazilian more than held his own playing in one of the worst defensive teams in Italy last term. Torino conceded 68 goals and went on to register some really impressive numbers over the course of his breakthrough campaign.

Verdict

Gleison Bremer still has three years left on his contract at Torino, so it remains to be seen how much the Serie A outfit demand for his sale. That being said, however, the Brazilian centre-back still has his best years ahead of him and perfectly bits the bill as a good long-term investment for Everton.
