Why Erling Haaland would be perfect to solve Real Madrid’s goalscoring woes
According to Marca (h/t The Sun), Real Madrid have made Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland their top target to bolster the attacking unit.
Haaland, 19, came through the ranks of Molde FC’s youth system in Norway and moved to RB Salzburg in January 2019. He burst onto the scene earlier in the season with his exploits in the Champions League and has been consistently finding the back of the net this term.
The teenager has been in red-hot form since the start of the campaign and has gone from strength to strength in the past few months. His move to Dortmund last January has helped him in his development and is turning out to be a deadly finisher. His performances have attracted a lot of top European teams including Real Madrid, as per the report.
Meanwhile, Zinedine Zidane has managed to change the dynamics of the team after Los Blancos had a nightmare 2018/19 campaign. The departure of Cristiano Ronaldo saw their goalscoring average reduce and they haven’t been the same since the Portuguese talisman’s move to Juventus.
Karim Benzema made a good start, scoring regularly in the first half of the campaign. But then, he has been on the score sheet only on 2 occasions in the last 11 league games. He is also 32 at the moment and would not have much to offer in the future.
Deputy striker Luka Jovic and Mariano Diaz haven’t been successful due to limited game time. They have fallen out of favour under the boss. Hence, they should consider injecting the squad with young and energetic strikers and Dortmund’s Erling Haaland would be a perfect signing for them.
The 19-year-old has been in devastating form for both Salzburg and Dortmund in each half of the season. After scoring 16 goals in 14 league games in Austria, he has been impressive in the German Bundesliga, scoring 9 goals in 8 games.
Haaland has been crucial to both the teams and has rescued them single-handedly on several occasions. He has evolved into a fine striker despite his tender age and less experience, and is one of the most promising youngsters who can become a future star if he continues with the same form.
The Norwegian is capable of bolstering any team’s attack and could be key for Zidane’s side. Given Benzema’s constant playing time without a convincing backup, Haaland would be more than capable of doing the job in the Frenchman’s absence.
