Why Emerson Royal to Everton would bolster their defence

As per Mundo Deportivo (h/t Liverpool Echo), Everton are considering of move for Barcelona right-back Emerson Royal, who currently plies his trade with Real Betis.

Emerson, 21, had spent time at the academies of Condor, Guanabara. FC Sao Paulo and Gremio before joining Ponte Preto’s U20 side. After a year with the latter’s senior team, he was signed by Atletico Mineiro, where he made 23 appearances.

He then moved to Real Betis before Barcelona signed him last summer. However, he stayed put with the Seville club on loan this season and has progressed to become one of the most sought-after players in Europe. The report also suggests that Barcelona are willing to offload him in the summer.

With the season coming to an end soon, Everton boss Ancelotti should bring in reinforcements to the squad. They have lacked depth in multiple positions and Ancelotti should make use of the upcoming transfer window in the best possible way.

Emerson could be a future replacement for Seamus Coleman

Ancelotti should focus on strengthening the right side of his backline. At the moment, the Toffees have two right-backs in their ranks. Seamus Coleman has been with the club for a decade now and Djibril Sidibe was signed on loan last summer.

Irish international Coleman has struggled with form and fitness this season. He is 31 now and is reaching the twilight of his career, and, the captain has just two more years left on his contract with the club.

Frenchman Sidibe has been brilliant so far and is also the club’s second-highest assist provider. However, he could be back to Ligue 1 when his loan contract expires at the end of the campaign. Thus, a right-back is a must for Everton in the summer.

In that regard, signing Emerson would help them secure their future. After struggling to make an impact in his debut season in La Liga, the Brazilian has gone on to become a key player for Betis this term. In 29 league games so far, he has already racked up 3 goals and 5 assists. And this shows his ability to contribute to the team’s attack apart from defending.

His inclusion to Ancelotti’s squad would be a boost, while he could also provide them with much-needed depth if Sidibe leaves.

With limited options at the back, it is clear that Everton are in need of a right-back. And Emerson could add quality to their squad if he is able to replicate the good form he has shown this term. He could also be a replacement for Coleman in the future. Thus, they should manage to secure the Brazilian’s signature ahead of next season.
