Why Davy Propper extending his contract with Brighton is a good move

According to Sky Sports, Brighton midfielder Davy Propper has extended his contract and will stay put until 2023 at the Amex Stadium.

Propper, 28, came through the youth ranks of Vitesse Arnhem in his hometown and played for six years with the club’s senior squad. He made 162 appearances for the club before joining PSV Eindhoven in 2015. He scored 22 times for them in 89 appearances.

The Dutchman was signed by English side Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer of 2017. Since then, he has been a regular member of the squad under both Chris Hughton and Graham Potter. He has featured 97 times for the Seagulls so far.

And the Brighton boss has praised him for his efforts on and off the pitch, as per the report. Propper has also won 17 caps for the Netherlands since his debut in 2015. He was also highly impressive in the nation’s European Qualifiers campaign.

After escaping relegation last season, the Seagulls have enjoyed life in this campaign. They have struggled to reach the top half and have been inconsistent so far. They were beaten 0-1 by second-tier side Sheffield Wednesday in the third round of the FA Cup and also have just one win in their last 8 league games.

Striker Neal Maupay was on fire at the start of the season, scoring 7 goals in the first 17 games but since then, he has not found the back of the net.

Their midfield has been a concern for Potter as well, despite having several options to chose from. Aaron Mooy, who initially joined on loan, made his move permanent last month. Propper has been benefitted from Mooy’s inclusion in the squad. His presence has allowed the Dutchman to stay deep when the other midfielders are free to move forward.

The 28-year-old may not have many goals or assists but he has been a part of Brighton’s midfield regularly over the last three seasons. His experience would be valuable since he is capable of performing decently in both attacking and anchoring roles.
