Why Danny Rose could be a smart signing for Wolves this summer

According to the Telegraph, Wolves have been mentioned as one of the clubs interested in securing the services of Tottenham outcast Danny Rose this summer.

As per the report, the Lilywhites are expected to allow the 30-year-old to leave the club before the transfer deadline in October. With Rose having only one year remaining on his contract, Tottenham are more interested in a permanent deal for the left-back.

Rose is currently back in North London after spending the second half of the previous campaign on loan at Newcastle United but Jose Mourinho doesn’t see him as an integral part of his plans heading into the upcoming campaign. (h/t The Telegraph)

Born in Doncaster, Danny Rose started his career at Leeds United before moving to Tottenham in 2007 and went through loan spells at Watford, Peterborough United, Bristol City, and Sunderland before establishing himself as a first-team regular in North London.

The 30-year-old came to be known as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League during his prime years, while also nailing down a regular spot in the national team. Rose retained his status as a regular starter for Tottenham until the arrival of Jose Mourinho towards the end of last year.

Having made only 12 league appearances during the first half of the previous campaign, Rose was shipped out on loan to Newcastle, where he made 9 appearances in all competitions.

The veteran left-back boasts an impressive tally of 10 goals and 29 assists in 214 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions but his time at the club could well be drawing to a close, with Mourinho apparently unwilling to rely on his ageing legs.

Wolves need some immediate cover at wing-back

Wolves have not completed a single senior signing in the summer window. On the contrary, the Midlands giants have already parted ways with one of the most influential players from their past two top-flight campaigns – Matt Doherty.

Jonny Otto Castro’s long-term injury coupled with Doherty’s unexpected departure has left Nuno Espirito Santo with very little cover in the wing-back department. Hence, Wolves currently have a massive task on their hands in trying to find two new players in key positions, with just more than a week remaining before the start of the new season.

To put things into perspective, Wolves are in dire need of some immediate cover out wide and Danny Rose could be a handy signing if he is available at the right price this summer. Wolves haven’t really looked to sign struggling players in the market in recent years, but as the cliche goes, desperate times call for desperate measures.

The England international’s career has been in a downward spiral over the past 12 months due to injuries and loss of form, but it will be interesting to see how he fares at a new club under a different manager like Nuno Espirito Santo.

Indeed, Rose has the experience of playing as a wing-back at Tottenham and also under Gareth Southgate in England’s national team, so that should make him an ideal fit for Wolves’ style of play.

Verdict

Danny Rose has been written off by several critics after a couple of unproductive seasons in the PL but his status as a seasoned campaigner in English football means that he could be exactly what Wolves need to combat a grave crisis.

It would be a bit of a gamble but one that could pay off handsomely for Wolves if they manage to revive Rose’s career.
