Why Dael Fry would be a fantastic signing for Everton

According to 90min.com (h/t Birmingham Live), Everton are interested in signing Middlesbrough defender Dael Fry in the summer.

Fry, 22, is a product of Middlesbrough’s youth academy and has been with the club since 2006. Though he had to struggle initially for a place in the starting XI, his loan spell with Rotherham United helped him integrate into Boro’s first-team. He has been a regular member of the Championship side in the past two seasons and is one of the best young defenders in the country.

The centre-back, valued at £20m, has also attracted interest from several top-flight clubs including Newcastle United, Burnley, Crystal Palace and Southampton. He has represented England at various age groups up to the U21 level. He has also made 95 appearances for his club, providing 5 assists in the process.

Everton, meanwhile, have endured a disappointing campaign so far. Despite making a good start under Carlo Ancelotti, they have failed to carry on with the momentum. They have struggled since the start of the season and currently find themselves in the 12th position in the league. Thus, it is necessary for Ancelotti to bring in reinforcements to the squad before the start of the new campaign.

Fry could bring stability to Everton’s defence in the future

The Toffees have been left with a shaky backline, shipping in 46 goals in 29 league games. Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate are the only three centre-backs available at the manager’s disposal. And their inconsistency has been highlighted throughout the campaign.

Thus, it would serve the Toffees well if they land in a centre-back in the summer. And Middlesbrough’s Fry would be a good signing for the club. The youngster was a regular member of the squad, which had the joint-best defensive record last season in the Championship.

He has featured in 27 games this term, helping his side keep 8 clean sheets. Fry has also captained his side on several occasions despite being only 22 and this shows how highly he is regarded. Thus, Everton signing him would be a good move. He would add depth and quality to Ancelotti’s squad and help the Toffees tighten up at the back.

Verdict

Everton have struggled defensively throughout the campaign. They also have limited options at the back and that could cause serious problems if they don’t recruit a defender for the new campaign. Hence, the Toffees should make a move for Fry this summer and lure him to Goodison Park.
