Why Crystal Palace should revive their interest in Filip Kostic

Back in February, Evening Standard suggested that Crystal Palace were interested in signing Eintracht Frankfurt star Filip Kostic. However, no such talks have progressed in recent times. The report also added that the Serbian had come on the radar of Roy Hodgson as he had been in sensational form for the German outfit.

The London-based club have endured mixed results so far. They were in the top half of the league table earlier in the campaign but have dropped to the 14th position after a poor run of results since restart.

They have been inconsistent throughout the campaign. However, with the new season approaching, Hodgson has to bring in reinforcements to the squad if they are to lift themselves and do better in furthers campaigns.

Kostic could provide Crystal Palace with quality on the left side

One area that the manager needs to address first and foremost is the midfield. The Eagles have only three central midfielders in their ranks in James McArthur, James McCarthy and Jeffrey Schlupp. And Max Meyer is the only attacking midfielder.

McArthur and McCarthy are both reaching the twilight of their careers and the manager should bring in players to improve the depth in the squad. Schlupp was also on the sidelines for the majority of the campaign due to injury and has featured in only 15 league games so far. Hence, the Eagles must go for Kostic in the upcoming transfer window.

The 27-year-old has been in sublime form for Frankfurt this season and has helped the club reach 9th position in the Bundesliga standings. He finished the season with 12 goals and 18 assists in 50 games across all competitions and has established himself as a key member under Adi Hutter.

The Serbian international has an experience of over 200 games in Germany spreading across clubs like Stuttgart, Hamburg SV, and Frankfurt. He has also been capped 32 times for his country and his experience could be handy for Palace.

Kostic has taken his game to the next level and has also impressed with some match-winning performances this season. Predominantly a left-midfielder, he is also capable of operating from the wings and his versatility could come in handy for the manager, who can use the Serbian on the left wing if Wilfried Zaha leaves, amid exit speculations.

Verdict

The 27-year-old is in the form of his life and Palace can enjoy his prime if they sign him. He has been reliable so far and would also provide them with some much-needed extra goals, whilst also adding depth and quality to the squad. Thus, the Eagles reigniting their interest in the former Stuttgart man would be a wise decision.
